Music Therapy: An IntroductionInstitute of Child Health, Royal Hospital for Sick Children, St. Michael's Hill, Bristol, BS2 8BJ, England The aims and historical development of music therapy are briefly described. Various approaches to research into music therapy are outlined, including recently developed ethological approaches. Much research has focussed on outcome measures, but there is a greater need for studies which focus on the nature of the therapeutic and musical process itself.
